U.S. Ambassador to Algeria Elizabeth Aubin attended the closing ceremony of a national youth basketball camp at La Coupole d’Alger Arena on July 27. The event brought together more than 100 young basketball players and marked the end of a series of regional camps organized in Tamanrasset, Jijel, and Ain Temouchent between May 2002 and April 2023. American men’s basketball coach Evan Davis from Alcon State taught during the final camp in Algiers.
The basketball camps were organized by the U.S. Embassy in Algeria in partnership with the Elite Student Athlete Academy (ESAA), and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The collaboration demonstrated how a universal passion for sports can transcend linguistic and sociocultural differences, empower youth and girls, and bring people together.
Addressing the participants, Ambassador Aubin said, “Congratulations to all the players who participated throughout this week. You saw firsthand the American values of community and team building that are vital not only in our sports but in everything we do as a nation. I am so impressed and honored to see the community that you’ve built with this group.”
The program is also an opportunity for the Algerian participants to learn about sports scholarship opportunities in U.S. high schools, colleges, and universities.
