MEPI Washington-Based Awards and Regional Projects

The Maghreb Youth Political Leadership Initiative II

Managed by the National Democratic Institute (http://www.ndi.org), this regional project seeks to strengthen the capacity of youth across the Maghreb to play a more active role in political parties and the political process.

Enhancing Women’s Political Engagement and Citizen Oversight of Elections

This two-year project (also managed by NDI) seeks to build the capacity of recently elected women members of parliament, to increase the political participation and activity of Algerian women, and to enhance the capacity of Algerian civil society organizations to observe future elections. 

Leadership and Empowerment for Action on Disability (LEAD) 

This regional project is directed by Handicap International in collaboration with the Algerian Federation of Persons with Disabilities.  It seeks to improve access to factual data analyses of the situation of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, and seeks to bolster civil society’s advocacy capacity.  The project additionally seeks to strengthen communication mechanisms within the national movements in order to promote sharing of information and experiences on equal rights advocacy.  Finally, the project will build a Maghreb-wide network in order to compare existing policies and programs, to identify common challenges, and to build linkages with other human rights movements.

Supporting CSO Advocacy for Increased Political and Economic Opportunity for Algerian Citizens

The Center for International Private Enterprise will work with Algerian business organization Club CARE and other business associations and NGOs to develop advocacy campaigns to encourage civic and economic inclusion of Algerian citizens. The project is designed to respond to the needs of Algerian associations to develop their professional capacity, and the need for Algerian citizens, particularly youth, to access greater economic opportunity.

Promoting Education, Altruism and Civic Engagement Program (PEACE)

Through the Promoting Education, Altruism and Civic Engagement (PEACE) program, World Learning will promote opportunities for Algerian university students and select young leaders with disabilities to constructively engage in addressing social problems within their communities by creating a strategic link between University Career Centers and surrounding local Civil Society Organizations, including Disabled Persons’ Organizations.

Middle East NGO Training and Organizational Development Response (MENTOR)

This regional project, directed by CRS and implemented locally by NADA, provides organizational management training to build sustainability of nascent civil associations while establishing networks among associations working across similar issue areas.  The project team will assess each association’s capacity and then customize training and materials for each association and finally award small grants of $5,000 to associations through a competitive process.

Algeria Alumni Network Chapter

This project supports and strengthens the commitment of MEPI alumni in Algeria to engage in civic activism and affect positive change in their communities.

Middle East and North Africa Campaign Schools

This regional project implemented by NDI provides prospective candidates for political office and campaign managers with the knowledge, tools, and skills to run more effective and responsive campaigns, as well as increasing the skills and competitiveness of women and youth to stand as candidates and gain experience working on campaigns.

Commercial Law Reform, Private Sector Development, and Good Governance

The Department of Commerce’s Commercial Law Development Program assists governments in the region to improve legislative and regulatory frameworks and environments.  The project seeks to provide technical assistance to regional governments in support of laws, institutions, and policies that foster private sector-driven economic growth, favor sustainable development, develop a knowledge-based economy, and promote good governance.

Improving Trade-Related Standards in the Middle East and North Africa

Another project developed and implemented by CLDP, this effort provides governments in the region with technical assistance to meet their WTO accession commitments through the multilateral and bilateral working party process.  Project leads conduct regional workshops on trade-related standards to improve intra-governmental coordination in crafting regulations, standards, and conformity-assessment procedures to facilitate trade and improve implementation of international obligations on technical barriers to trade, including transparency and notification.
