U.S Ambassador to Algeria Travels to Sahrawi Refugee Camps

Ambassador John Desrocher conducted a two-day visit to Tindouf on March 27-29 to see the humanitarian situation in the Sahrawi refugee camps. During his visit, Ambassador Desrocher met with Algerian local officials, held discussions with United Nations representatives and NGOs, and spoke with Sahrawi refugees – particularly the youth – to learn more about the issues affecting them.

The U.S. government is pleased to partner with UNHCR and other humanitarian actors in their efforts to meet the needs of the refugees. Since last year, more than $8.5 million in U.S. humanitarian assistance was designated for the Sahrawi refugees.

The United States strongly supports the UN-led negotiations process, and hopes it achieves a just, long-lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution that will provide for the self-determination of the people of the Western Sahara.
